2012-08-24-BYODDeviceMontageAs an advocate of BYOD, we believe it’s necessary to create a seamless process for IT departments to implement mobility in the workforce.  We’ve made the point on this blog on numerous occasions that most companies have a tendency to overcomplicate mobility in the enterprise.  We’ve spent years simplifying the process, and wanted to offer a few tips that may help organizations to more effectively implement BYOD in the enterprise.

Don’t Limit Device Choices

While most would think limiting the devices that are able to be used for BYOD would bode well for IT department heads, limiting devices actually does the opposite mostly due to the need to constantly update its policy as new devices are released. We recommend organizations categorize and approve a broad range of devices appropriate to the business’s needs.

Implement a Clear Security Policy

As the consumer demand for BYOD rises, most companies are concerned with the information obtained by one employee and what is being shared on their device. One way to account for a company to protect their secure information is by implementing a policy which allows the company to wipe clean a having information erased at the companies discretion, they can either get a company device or not join the program.

BYOD should include a phone with the right capabilities

A problem often faced with BYOD is the upgrades that come with smart phones and the task of updating the employee phones.  Employees who opt into a company BYOD programs should make sure the contracts they have on their devices are flexible enough to allow corporate upgrades.

Opt In or Opt Out

Having the option for employees not only helps the IT department, but also gives employees more flexibility in terms of what they want to use. If you have a solid policy in place, most will tend to  opt into it but giving the employees the option to not participate allows for a happier employee and a more productive IT department.
